Denmark allows heavy goods vehicles to circulate freely at weekends and on public holidays. The main constraints focus on Copenhagen (night-time and prescribed routes), on oversize transport during peak summer heat, and on ADR transport when crossing the Øresund. Here are the details.

1. General rule

Weekends and public holidays are free. Denmark imposes no general driving ban on HGVs at weekends or on public holidays.

2. Restrictions in Copenhagen

HGVs over 3.5 t may not travel at night, from 19:00 to 07:00.

HGVs over 18 t must use the following routes: Nørre and Vester Voldgade, Stormgade, Molmens Kanal and Gothergade; routes via Chr. IX's Gade, Kr. Bernikowsgade and Bremerholm are also permitted.

In certain cases, Copenhagen police may grant exemptions:

3. Special transport in extreme heat

From 15 June to 31 August, when the temperature exceeds 25 °C, HGVs exceeding the maximum weight or dimensions are prohibited between 12:00 and 18:00.

4. Dangerous goods transport (ADR)

HGVs carrying dangerous goods may not use the Øresund Bridge between 06:00 and 23:00.

Transport of goods in classes 1.1 and 1.5 (explosives) is limited to 5,000 kg per vehicle.

5. Good to know

💡Lights: dipped headlights compulsory all year round, 24 hours a day.
