🇱🇺 Luxembourg — truck driving bans 2026
The Grand Duchy follows a specific logic: its weekend bans only target transit traffic that does not stop in Luxembourg, with different time windows depending on whether you are heading towards France or Germany. On top of that, overtaking is almost entirely prohibited on motorways, and a handful of road sections are permanently closed. Here are the details.
1. General rule
In Luxembourg, the weekend ban only applies to transit traffic: it targets trucks over 7.5 t GVW that are not destined for Luxembourg itself. The time windows differ depending on your destination:
🇫🇷Transit towards France. Ban on Saturdays and eves of public holidays, from 21:30 until the following Sunday or public holiday at 21:45.
🇩🇪Transit towards Germany. Ban on Saturdays and eves of public holidays, from 23:30 until the following Sunday or public holiday at 21:45.
2. Exemptions
The following are exempt from the weekend ban:
- Transport of live animals, perishable goods and cut flowers, as well as empty runs related to these transports when carried out towards Germany.
- Combined rail-road transport, between the loading/unloading point and the transhipment station, provided the distance is less than 200 km and the transport is carried out towards Germany.
3. Public holidays 2026
The eves and public holidays listed below trigger the transit ban described above. Note: the National Day on 23 June is an exception — driving restrictions do not apply on that day.
1 January — New Year's Day
5 April — Easter Sunday
6 April — Easter Monday
1 May — Labour Day
9 May — Europe Day
14 May — Ascension Thursday
25 May — Whit Monday
23 June — National Day (no ban on this day)
15 August — Assumption
1 November — All Saints' Day
25 December — Christmas Day
26 December — St Stephen's Day
4. Overtaking ban
Trucks over 3.5 t GVW are not allowed to overtake on almost all of the Grand Duchy's 125 km of motorway network.
5. Permanent restrictions
In addition to the weekend rules, several road sections are permanently closed to trucks over 3.5 t GVW. Click to expand the details:
