🇧🇾 Belarus — HGV driving bans 2026

Belarus does not close its roads to trucks at weekends or on public holidays. However, two seasonal weather-related restrictions apply to heavy goods vehicles with an axle load exceeding 6 tonnes: a spring thaw ban and a summer heat ban. Here are the details.

⚠️ Thresholds, dates and the list of affected roads may change from year to year. This page is kept as up to date as possible but does not replace the official order: before a sensitive journey or in the event of a dispute, check the current regulations with the Belarusian authorities. Here, the threshold applies to axle weight (not GVW).

1. General rule

No weekend or public holiday ban. Unlike many Western European countries, Belarus does not close its roads to heavy goods vehicles on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays.

🌡️Two weather-related restrictions. The only bans are seasonal: the spring thaw (March and April) and summer heat (June to August). Both apply only to vehicles with an axle load exceeding 6 tonnes.

2. Thaw ban (March and April)

To protect road surfaces weakened by the thaw, a driving ban applies during March and April to heavy goods vehicles with an axle load exceeding 6 tonnes. It covers national roads as well as motorways M8, M10, M11 and M12.

Many sections remain open to traffic. Click to view the list of exempt routes:

This thaw ban does not apply to the transport of live animals, medicines and fuel, nor to emergency vehicles.

3. Summer ban in extreme heat (June to August)

From early June to the end of August, when the outside temperature exceeds 25 °C, heavy goods vehicles with an axle load above 6 tonnes may not travel during the day, from 11:00 to 21:00.

The following transport types are exempt from this ban:

  • passengers
  • live animals
  • flowers
  • humanitarian freight
  • concrete and bitumen
  • dangerous goods
  • perishable goods
  • seeds

Emergency vehicles are also exempt.

4. Good to know

⚖️Axle threshold, not GVW: both Belarusian bans are triggered by axle load (over 6 t), a criterion that differs from the GVW used in most Western European countries.

🌡️Watch the thermometer in summer: the 11:00–21:00 ban only activates above 25 °C. In cooler weather, the road stays open — but a heat wave can halt your day without warning.

🗓️No weekend schedule: no restrictions on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays. The only obstacles to anticipate are the thaw (March–April) and the heat (June–August).
