🇱🇻 Latvia — HGV driving restrictions 2026

Good news for anyone crossing the Baltic states: Latvia imposes no driving restrictions on heavy goods vehicles at weekends or on public holidays. The only notable constraint concerns the capital, Riga, where bridge access to the city centre is closed to large vehicles during peak hours. Here are the details.

⚠️ Thresholds and timetables may change. This page is kept up to date as far as possible but does not replace the official order: before a sensitive journey or a dispute, check the current regulations with the Latvian authorities and the Riga municipality. GVW is the gross vehicle weight.

1. General rule

Latvia is one of the most flexible countries in Europe on this point:

No national ban. There are no HGV driving restrictions at weekends or on public holidays. Trucks may therefore travel freely on the road network, except for the single local restriction detailed below.

2. Restrictions in Riga

In the capital, vehicles over 5 t GVW are banned during peak hours on the bridges leading to the city centre: Monday to Friday, 7:00–10:00 and 16:00–19:00.

The routes and structures affected by this ban:

Bridges and routes banned for vehicles over 5 t (7:00–10:00 / 16:00–19:00)

Stone Bridge and Holy Trinity Bridge, as well as Daugavgrivas, Akmenu, Valguma, Mukusalas, Krasta, 11-Novembra and Eksporta streets, Vienibas Avenue and Uzvaras Boulevard.

Slavu Bridge.

Deglava Bridge.

Zemitana Bridge.

🧭Recommended route. Traffic remains permitted on the Slavu ring road. To avoid the Slavu Bridge, it is recommended to use Krustpils Street.

3. Good to know

🅿️During Riga peak hours, plan your slot in advance: if you need to deliver to the centre, schedule access outside the 7:00–10:00 and 16:00–19:00 windows, or use the bypass via the Slavu ring road and Krustpils Street.

📅No national calendar constraint: neither weekends nor public holidays block HGV traffic in Latvia, providing great flexibility for organising Baltic transit journeys.

📞Useful number: 112 (single European emergency number, valid in Latvia).
