🇪🇪 Estonia — HGV driving bans 2026
Good news for anyone crossing the Baltic states: Estonia does not close its roads to trucks at weekends or on public holidays. There are, however, two restrictions to be aware of — a Friday afternoon window on the main Tallinn–Tartu road and a hazardous goods rule in the capital. Here are the details.
1. General rule
Estonia is among the most flexible European countries on this point:
✅No weekend or public holiday ban. Heavy goods vehicles may circulate on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays without any national calendar-based restriction.
2. Local restrictions
A single route restriction is in force, and it concerns very long vehicles on the country's main road:
🚫E236 / road no. 2 (Tallinn–Tartu–Võru–Luhamaa). Heavy goods vehicles over 12 metres in length are prohibited every Friday from 13:00 to 20:00, between Jüri/Tallinn (km 11.8) and Kärevere/Tartu (km 169.1).
3. Hazardous materials (ADR)
☢️The transport of hazardous materials is prohibited in Tallinn on working days during peak hours: from 07:00 to 09:00 in the morning and from 17:00 to 19:00 in the evening.
4. Good to know
❄️Tyres: winter tyres compulsory from 1 December to 1 March (or from 1 October to 1 April in adverse weather conditions); chains permitted only on snow-covered or icy roads; studded tyres prohibited for HGVs over 3.5 t GVW.
💡Lights: dipped headlights compulsory all year round, 24 h/day.
📞Useful numbers: 112 (police, fire and emergency services); Estonian Automobile Club (EESTI) breakdown service at +372 69 79 188, or 1888 from a mobile phone.
