🇱🇮 Liechtenstein — HGV driving bans 2026

The principality is small but its rules align with those of its alpine neighbours: no HGVs on Sundays or public holidays, and a nightly ban every day. Here is what you need to know before crossing Liechtenstein.

⚠️ Calendars (public holidays) and thresholds may change. This fact sheet is kept up to date as best as possible but does not replace the official regulation: before a sensitive journey or a dispute, check the rules in force with the authorities of the principality. GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) is the maximum authorised laden weight.

1. General rule

Two basic bans apply in Liechtenstein:

🚫Sundays and public holidays. Driving ban on Sundays and public holidays, from 0:00 to 24:00 (all day).

🌙Night. Driving ban every night, from 22:00 to 05:00.

These bans apply to:

  • HGVs with more than 3.5 t GVW;
  • tractors and industrial machinery;
  • HGVs towing a trailer with more than 5 t total weight.

2. Exemption

A permit may be issued for the transport of perishable goods.

4. Good to know

🗺️Small territory: Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south, and by Austria to the east. Make sure to check the restrictions of both countries depending on your route.

📅Full Sunday ban: unlike some neighbouring countries where the weekend ban lasts only a few hours, here Sunday is blocked from 0:00 to 24:00.
