🇦🇹 Austria — traffic bans heavy goods vehicles 2026
Austria is one of the strictest countries in Europe for heavy goods vehicles: broad weekend and nighttime bans, low-emission zones linked to the Euro standard, and an impressive list of local bans — especially in Tyrol. Here is the detail, route by route.
1. General rule
There are two basic prohibitions in Austria:
🚫Weekends and public holidays. Ban on Saturday 3 p.m. to Sunday 10 p.m., and the public holidays from 12 a.m. to 10 p.m.. It targets combinations with trailers of more than 3.5 t of GVW, as well as trucks, semi-trailer tractors and agricultural machinery of more than 7.5 t of GVW.
🌙Night. General ban on driving at night, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., for heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 t GVW (see also section 6).
2. Exemptions
Escaping the weekend ban:
- Road service vehicles and rescue/emergency vehicles.
- Vehicles little noisy bearing the “L” sign on the plate (subject to a certificate from the manufacturer and an inspection renewed every two years). They can only ride less than 60 km/h, unless otherwise indicated in the signage.
- The transportation of perishable goods (excluding frozen foods), milk, oflive animals intended for the slaughterhouse (but not on motorways) and refreshments for tourist areas.
- Transportation exclusively combined, within a radius of 65 km around the stations Brennersee, Graz-Ostbahnhof, Salzburg-Hauptbahnhof, Wels-Verschiebebahnhof, Villach-Fürnitz, Wien-Südbahnhof, Wien-Nordwestbahnhof, Wörgl, Hall in Tirol CCT, Bludenz CCT and Wolfurt CCT.
- Regular lines and local journeys, two Saturdays preceding December 24.
